Hi Reader, There’s something we really need to talk about. Mental health.Specifically, how your mood, anxiety, and emotional wellbeing are often deeply affected when you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s - but no one warns you. Doctors might mention weight gain. Tiredness. Brain fog. But what they don’t say is that low thyroid hormones can lead to serious depression. Crushing anxiety. Rage that feels like it comes out of nowhere. Emotional numbness. And yes - even suicidal thoughts in extreme cases. That’s not just my opinion - sadly there’s actual research showing higher suicide rates in people with untreated or under-treated hypothyroidism. And this hits close to home for me. Years ago, I was out for coffee with a friend. It was a lovely day. Nothing was wrong. And out of nowhere, I was hit by this wave of despair so deep, I didn’t know what to do with it. No trigger. No reason. Just a sinking feeling that something was off. And after my thyroid was removed, things got even worse. I was put on too low a dose of medication - just 75mcg - and my mental health spiralled. If it weren’t for my family (my son walking me every day), I honestly don’t know what would’ve happened. So here’s what I want you to know: 💥 There are two key factors that can massively affect your mental health - and most people don’t even know about them: 1️⃣ Low or unoptimised thyroid hormonesIf your T3 is too low, your brain simply doesn’t function properly. And yet, too often, women go to their doctor feeling low… and get put straight on antidepressants without anyone checking their thyroid panel properly. 👉 This is why you must ask for a full panel: TSH, free T4, and free T3. 2️⃣ Gluten – and how it messes with your brain (especially if you’ve got Hashimoto’s)Most people think gluten just causes digestive problems. But for many women with thyroid conditions - especially Hashimoto’s - gluten can really affect your mental health too. Here’s why: If you have Hashimoto’s or any autoimmune issue, your gut lining is more likely to be damaged or “leaky.” That means things that shouldn't normally pass into your bloodstream - like certain food proteins - do get through. Gluten is one of the worst culprits. When gluten is broken down in the body, it creates a substance called gliadorphin - which acts like a drug in the brain. It attaches to the same brain receptors as things like morphine and heroin. 😵 Brain fog Gluten (and dairy too - thanks to a similar compound called casomorphin) can become almost addictive. These substances give you a hit of calm or pleasure… and then leave you crashing afterward. That crash can look like anxiety, sadness, irritability, or emotional numbness. So if your thyroid hormones are already too low, and your immune system is overreacting (as it is with Hashimoto’s), this creates a perfect storm: ➡️ A brain that’s struggling without enough thyroid hormone No wonder so many women feel like they’re going mad - when really, it’s their biology crying out for support. So what can you actually do?

Hello Reader, I want to talk about a kind of tiredness that words don’t really cover. The kind that seeps into your bones. The kind that makes even walking up the stairs feel like climbing a mountain. When my hypothyroidism first really kicked off after having my children, that’s what it was like. Looking back, I think it started much earlier, maybe after glandular fever in my teens, but pregnancy was what tipped it over the edge. I remember standing halfway up the stairs, two little kids in...
Hi Reader, I’m taking part in a traffic challenge this month – but this isn’t about numbers for me. It’s about bringing this space to as many women as possible who need it. My community, The Hypothyroid Recovery Hub, is for women with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s who are tired of feeling stuck, unheard, and unsure what to do next – and who are ready to take their energy and confidence back. My vision is simple: a safe, supportive space where women can finally get clear answers, rebuild trust...
Hi Reader, I want to talk about something I hear far too often from women with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s: “I’m over 50 now, so this is just my lot. It’s all downhill from here.” And you know what makes this worse? Doctors reinforce it. 😠 You go in feeling exhausted, gaining weight, or struggling to concentrate - and you’re told: “Oh, that’s menopause.”“Oh, it’s just your age.” As if that’s the end of the story. But it isn’t. The truth is: blaming age for thyroid symptoms is one of the...
