If you're on Ozempic (or thinking about it), this is worth knowing

Hi Reader,

One of our community members sent me a link to a great podcast episode last week.

And I'm really glad she did – because it covers something I genuinely don't think gets talked about enough.

Here's something a lot of us know all too well: getting your medication optimised is hard.

Really hard.

And often it doesn't happen – not properly, not without a fight.

When your thyroid isn't well managed, your body isn't working the way it should.

And weight can be one of the most stubborn, demoralising parts of that.

So you try things.

Different diets, different approaches, different everything.

And when the weight still won't shift – despite doing all the right things – it makes complete sense to start looking at other options.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are everywhere right now, and for a lot of people, that conversation is starting to happen with their GP.

That's absolutely fine. This isn't about telling anyone what to do.

But this podcast covers some really important things to know if you're on these medications – or thinking about them – and I haven't seen them covered anywhere else quite like this.

If this is relevant to you, this is important knowledge that could genuinely help.

What the episode covers

The podcast is Reversing Hashimoto's with Dr Anshul Gupta, and this episode looks specifically at GLP-1 drugs and thyroid health.

Some of the things he raises that I think are really worth knowing about:

⚠️ How these medications can interfere with levothyroxine absorption

⚠️ The effect on key nutrients – ferritin, vitamin D, and selenium – which can drop while taking them

⚠️ Why those particular deficiencies hit thyroid patients harder than most

⚠️ The lesser-known risks around muscle loss and nutrient depletion

⚠️ Natural alternatives that have science behind them

The bit I really want you to take away

The nutrient piece is the one I keep coming back to.

Because here's the thing – the nutrients that can become depleted on these medications are the exact ones that matter most for thyroid function. Ferritin. Selenium. Vitamin D.

If levels are already borderline (and for many of us, they are), this matters. A lot.

And it doesn't seem like many people are having this conversation with their patients.

That's not a criticism of anyone's doctor.

GPs are working under enormous pressure and time constraints. But it does mean that sometimes, we have to be the ones to ask the questions.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

If you're taking a GLP-1 medication, ask your GP or specialist to monitor ferritin, vitamin D, and selenium regularly – don't assume it'll happen automatically

✅ If you've noticed your thyroid symptoms worsening since starting one of these medications, it's worth exploring whether nutrient levels or levothyroxine absorption could be a factor

✅ Being informed isn't the same as being difficult. Asking questions is you taking care of yourself.

✅ There's no one-size-fits-all answer here. What matters is finding what works for you – with the full picture in front of you

ACTION STEPS

  1. Give the episode a listen – link below
  2. Check when you last had ferritin, vitamin D, and selenium tested
  3. If it's been a while (or never), it might be worth raising this at your next appointment

The biggest thing I've learnt through all of this is that being informed changes everything.

Not because it gives you all the answers – but because it means you can ask better questions.

And better questions lead to better care.

That's what all of this is really about.

With love,

Hi Reader, At the weekend, I did something I absolutely loved - and I've been paying for it My son's brass band was competing at the Whit Friday Brass Band Competition at the weekend. If you don't know it, it's this wonderfully chaotic Lancashire and Yorkshire tradition where bands travel between villages around Manchester and Huddersfield, playing in competition after competition, jumping on and off coaches all day long. It's brilliant. It really is. Sun out, bands playing, crowds cheering....

Hi Reader, Monday was World Thyroid Day. And if you're anything like me, you probably scrolled past a few posts about it, felt a complicated mix of things, and got on with your day. I've been thinking about why that is. Why these awareness days feel increasingly hollow for so many of us. And I think it comes down to one simple thing. We are already aware. ☹️ The awareness day problem Every year, certain conditions get their day. Their ribbon. Their hashtag. And I understand why these things...

Hi Reader, Think about the Titanic. A huge, slow ship. A confident captain at the wheel. Charts, instruments, years of experience. And an iceberg that sank it anyway. Not because the captain was careless. But because his instruments couldn't see what was underneath the surface. This is exactly what is happening with standard thyroid treatment. What your doctor can see Your TSH result. Maybe your T4. If those numbers fall inside the normal range, the appointment is over. Medication adjusted if...
