The dangerous thyroid symptom no one warns you about

Hi Reader,

There’s something we really need to talk about.

Mental health.

Specifically, how your mood, anxiety, and emotional wellbeing are often deeply affected when you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s - but no one warns you.

Doctors might mention weight gain. Tiredness. Brain fog.

But what they don’t say is that low thyroid hormones can lead to serious depression.

Crushing anxiety. Rage that feels like it comes out of nowhere.

Emotional numbness. And yes - even suicidal thoughts in extreme cases.

That’s not just my opinion - sadly there’s actual research showing higher suicide rates in people with untreated or under-treated hypothyroidism.

And this hits close to home for me.

Years ago, I was out for coffee with a friend. It was a lovely day. Nothing was wrong. And out of nowhere, I was hit by this wave of despair so deep, I didn’t know what to do with it.

No trigger. No reason. Just a sinking feeling that something was really off.

That moment was a red flag. And it eventually led me to discover my thyroid wasn’t functioning properly.

And after my thyroid was removed, things got even worse. I was put on too low a dose of medication - just 75mcg - and my mental health spiralled. If it weren’t for my family (my little son getting me out every day for a walk), I honestly don’t know what would’ve happened.

So here’s what I want you to know:

💥 There are two key factors that can massively affect your mental health - and most people don’t even know about them:

1️⃣ Low or unoptimised thyroid hormones

If your T3 is too low, your brain simply doesn’t function properly.
Your neurotransmitters, your energy, your ability to regulate mood - all of it is disrupted.

And yet, too often, women go to their doctor feeling low… and get put straight on antidepressants without anyone checking their thyroid panel properly.

👉 This is why you must ask for a full panel: TSH, free T4, and free T3.
All three matter. In-range is not the same as optimal.

2️⃣ Gluten – and how it messes with your brain (especially if you’ve got Hashimoto’s)

Most people think gluten just causes digestive problems.
But for many women with thyroid conditions - especially Hashimoto’s - gluten can really affect your mental healthtoo.

Here’s why:

If you have Hashimoto’s or any autoimmune issue, your gut lining is more likely to be damaged or “leaky.” That means things that shouldn't normally pass into your bloodstream - like certain food proteins - do get through. Gluten is one of the worst culprits.

When gluten is broken down in the body, it creates a substance called gliadorphin - which acts like a drug in the brain.

It attaches to the same brain receptors as things like morphine and heroin.
And it can mess with your mood in a big way.

😵 Brain fog
😔 Fatigue
😤 Mood swings or rage
🌀 Even hallucinations in extreme cases

Gluten (and dairy too - thanks to a similar compound called casomorphin) can become almost addictive.

These substances give you a hit of calm or pleasure… and then leave you crashing afterward. That crash can look like anxiety, sadness, irritability, or emotional numbness.

So if your thyroid hormones are already too low, and your immune system is overreacting (as it is with Hashimoto’s), this creates a perfect storm:

➡️ A brain that’s struggling without enough thyroid hormone

plus

➡️ Gluten acting like a drug, messing with your mood and your mental clarity

No wonder so many women feel like they’re going mad - when really, it’s their biology crying out for support.

So what can you actually do?

  1. Get your thyroid levels properly checked.
TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 - don’t settle for less.
  2. Ditch the gluten (and ideally the grains).
Try it for a few weeks. Track your mood. Notice how you feel.
  3. Start tracking your symptoms daily.
You’re not imagining it. Your body is giving you clues.

You deserve clarity. Peace. Energy. Joy.

Not just to “function” - but to feel like yourself again.

The good news? That’s possible.
With the right support, the right info, and the right steps.

And that’s exactly what I’m building for you inside The Hypothyroid Recovery Hub - my new space where we look at all this through a different lens.

Not “just take a pill and be quiet.”
But “let’s figure out what’s really going on - and get you back to feeling like YOU again.”

Hi Reader, Let’s talk about something I see all the time in my community - and maybe you’ve thought it too: “I’ll never feel better unless I can afford functional medicine doctors... all their tests, all their supplements… and I just don't have that kind of money” It’s an easy belief to fall into.
