Antibiotics are sometimes necessary… but this step matters too

Hi Reader,

Sometimes antibiotics are necessary.

But if you’re dealing with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, what happens after antibiotics can matter just as much.

Many women with thyroid issues already struggle with things like:

• bloating
• SIBO
• food sensitivities
• fatigue that just won’t shift
• inflammation that feels difficult to explain

And very often, a lot of this traces back to the gut.

Antibiotics can be incredibly useful when we truly need them. But they don’t just target the bacteria causing the infection. They can also wipe out some of the beneficial bacteria that help keep the gut ecosystem balanced.

And that balance really matters.

Something that happened to me this week

This week I developed a tooth abscess.

At first, I tried to avoid antibiotics. I gave it a couple of days, hoping my body might resolve it on its own.

But it quickly became clear that wasn’t going to happen.

So I took them.

Sometimes you simply have to.

But whenever I do take antibiotics, my next thought is always the same:

How do I help rebuild the microbiome afterwards?

My “super-powered yoghurt”

One of the things I make is what I call my super-powered yoghurt.

This isn’t the kind of yoghurt you normally find in the supermarket.

Most commercial yoghurts are fermented for a relatively short time and contain fairly modest levels of beneficial bacteria.

The version I make is fermented for around 36 hours with specific bacterial strains, which produces a much higher level of beneficial microbes.

It’s actually quite powerful.

When someone first starts having it, I always suggest going very slowly — sometimes just a teaspoon to begin with.

I originally learned about this approach from the book Super Gut by William Davis. If you’re interested in gut health, it’s a fascinating read. He talks about specific strains of bacteria and how they can help restore balance in the gut.

Why this matters so much

This is particularly relevant for thyroid clients because gut imbalance and SIBO are extremely common in people with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.

But there’s another reason I take this seriously.

Years ago, my son developed sudden, severe Tourette’s after a strep infection. It appeared almost overnight, with both vocal and motor tics.

It was incredibly frightening as a parent.

Working on the gut became one of the pieces of the protocol that helped things gradually settle down.

And today?

He’s completely fine.

That experience completely changed the way I think about the microbiome and the body’s internal terrain.

Rebuilding after antibiotics

So when antibiotics are necessary, I don’t panic.

I simply focus on rebuilding afterwards.

Things like:

• long-fermented yoghurt
• fermented foods
• bone broth
• specific probiotic strains

These are small things.

But over time, they can make a real difference to how the body functions, especially when the thyroid system is already under strain.

If you enjoy these kinds of practical ideas

If this kind of practical, real-life strategy interests you, that’s exactly the sort of thing we talk about inside the Hypothyroid Recovery Hub.

It’s where I share ideas, experiments, recipes and small daily practices that can help people with thyroid issues support their bodies in a more practical way.

You can explore it here if you’d like:

No pressure at all.

But if you enjoy these kinds of small, practical “life with thyroid” strategies, you’ll probably find it a helpful place to be.
